I accidentally put my car in ‘park’ while driving. Should I get it checked out?

It would be worthwhile having your vehicle checked by a workshop, especially if you do a lot of country driving. Draining and replacing the automatic transmission fluid should help remove any metal debris that may cause further damage within the unit.

My car often starts shuddering for a little while when I first start it but then it seems to be fine. What does this shudder indicate?

The shuddering could have a number of causes, potentially being the result of a misfire that disappears as the engine warms up. This misfire could be caused by faulty and/or dirty spark plugs, or faulty high-tension leads. There may also be problems with the fuel delivery system, such as with the fuel injectors or the automatic choke. To pinpoint the problem, this will need the attention of a trained mechanic so the issue can be isolated and fixed. My car shudders and whines when reversing. What could be done to fix this?

How do I reset the oil change warning light?

To reset the oil change warning light please follow these steps. Turn the key ignition on (not the engine) then hold down the brake and accelerator for 20 seconds. The warning light should then turn off. If this doesn’t work, it would be best to visit a dealership.

What symptoms would be expected from a car approaching its end of life?

There is no definitive timeframe for when a car reaches the end of its useful life. More likely than any significant mechanical signs is you will reach a point where the vehicle increasingly requires maintenance and then major repairs in order to keep it running and roadworthy. For most people, the deciding factor will be balancing the cost of those repairs against the vehicle’s market value. That tipping point may be well beyond 200,000km. Many vehicles can travel more than 200,000km with only regular maintenance and minor repairs, and this milestone doesn’t always mean the vehicle’s time is up.

My Hybrid car's distance indicator is showing a decline in kilometres. What does this mean?

This may be due to the rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride (Ni-MH) battery in the car’s hybrid system gradually decreasing in its ability to retain charge. If the battery is holding less charge, the hybrid system is less able to use its electric drive capability and so must use the petrol engine more regularly, which would decrease the vehicle’s range. Alternatively, it could be an issue with the calibration of the car’s electronics. An automotive workshop will be able to confirm either scenario.
