Perth’s worst merging locations have been revealed in a new RAC survey, with the Narrows Bridge and Mitchell and Kwinana Freeways topping the list.
More than 950 RAC members participated in the Merging Hotspots Survey and nominated the worst locations for merging on Perth roads. The top 5 results were:
- Perth CBD to Kwinana Freeway Southbound (Narrows Bridge)
- Mitchell Freeway & Ocean Reef Road
- Mitchell Freeway & Whitfords Avenue
- Mitchell Freeway & Vincent Street
- Kwinana Freeway & Canning Highway
RAC data also shows the end of the working week — Thursdays and Fridays — are the most common days for crashes while merging.
RAC Claims Manager Glen Walker said merging continues to be a concern on Perth roads.
“Nearly all survey respondents (98 per cent) told us they know how to merge correctly and safely, but only four percent believe other drivers on the road can,” Mr Walker said.
“Failing to merge properly not only causes frustration, but it also disrupts the flow of traffic and can lead to crashes that are entirely preventable.
“We tend to see a spike in merging crashes at the end of the workweek, with the majority resulting in rear-end collisions.
“To avoid being involved in a crash while merging, make sure to maintain a safe distance between yourself and other cars, check your mirrors regularly and indicate early to signal your intentions.
“Travelling at the same speed as the traffic you’re merging with will also make for a smoother and safer driving experience.”
According to the Road Safety Commission, where two lanes merge into one, the vehicle in front has the right of way. If there are two separate lanes and your lane ends, you must give way to vehicles already in the lane you’re moving into.
“Rather than rushing to be the driver ahead, we’d encourage motorists to take it in turns to merge, especially if you find yourself stuck in heavy traffic,” Mr Walker said.
“Patience and courtesy can go a long way on our roads, so a quick wave to acknowledge other drivers also wouldn’t go astray.”
