RAC is urging Western Australians to prepare their homes for winter weather as storms predicted to hit soon.

RAC Insurance spokesperson, Glen Walker said RAC received 21,333 claims in 2023.

“WA’s recent warmer weather may mean some have delayed or forgotten to undertake their annual winter preparations,” Mr Walker said.

Storms can come quickly and catch homeowners off guard, so It's crucial everyone takes the time to get their houses ready for the wild weather ahead”.

Common causes of storm damage include roof maintenance issues, fallen trees and branches, and flooding from blocked gutters and downpipes.

“The most common items damaged in a winter storm include fences and gates, ceilings, rooves and patios, which is why it’s important to prepare your home in advance including securing any loose items around your property,” Mr Walker said.

“During a storm, when roads are extra slippery and visibility is reduced, the risk of being involved in a serious crash is also much higher.”

“We urge motorists to avoid taking risks in stormy weather by driving to the conditions, slowing down, and if necessary, pulling over until it’s safe to drive again.”

RAC’s storm preparation tips:

  • Check your roof for any damage and replace any damaged or missing tiles
  • Clear your gutters and downpipes
  • Trim tree branches
  • Secure any loose items around your property, including outdoor furniture, play equipment and trampolines
  • Park vehicles under shelter
  • Prepare an emergency kit with a torch, spare batteries, first aid kit and battery powered charger
  • Bring pets to shelter and ensure their tag details are up to date
