New figures have revealed the Pilbara was the only area in regional WA to not see a reduction in road deaths in 2023.
According to statistics released by the WA Road Safety Commission, regional WA saw an overall 28 per cent decrease in road fatalities in 2023 compared to 2022.
However, the Pilbara was the only regional area where fatalities failed to decrease and instead climbed a concerning 67 per cent compared to the previous year.
RAC General Manager External Relations Will Golsby said regional WA continued to be one the most dangerous places to drive anywhere in the country.
“The level of road trauma that occurs in Western Australia is unacceptable. We all share a responsibility to make our roads safe,” Mr Golsby said.
“Deaths and serious injuries on our roads have a devastating and long-lasting impact on far too many families and local communities in Western Australia.”
“Country driving presents unique risks including longer distances, higher speeds, poorer road conditions, and wandering wildlife. That’s why it’s so important to plan ahead, to be patient, and to remain alert at all times.”
The quality and safety credentials of many regional roads can also lead to serious crashes.
Great Northern Highway from Port Hedland to Newman was named one of the ten most dangerous roads in regional WA in RAC’s 2022 Risky Roads survey with drivers dissatisfied with the narrow road, lack of overtaking opportunities and poor road quality.
“RAC strongly welcomes recent investment by governments to upgrade and improve the safety of our regional roads, and will continue to call for further funding in the years ahead,” Mr Golsby said.
