RAC is urging motorists to make safety their top priority this long weekend, with new statistics revealing a shocking level of road trauma over past Labour Day breaks.
Between 2014 and 2018, 16 people lost their lives on WA roads and 70 others have been left with life-changing injuries following serious crashes over Labour Day long weekends.
RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs Will Golsby said it’s a tragic reminder to drive safely this weekend.
“Tragically, data shows that each Labour Day long weekend, 17 people are either killed or seriously injured on WA roads — a shocking level of unnecessary suffering,” Mr Golsby said.
“Not only is this number unacceptably high, but it represents real people whose lives have been cut short or forever-changed through injury and trauma, which has a devastating impact on our communities.
“On average, someone is either killed or seriously injured on WA roads every five hours and last year was one of our worst in recent years for road fatalities.
“This weekend, we’re urging everyone to take extra care on our roads, slow down, ditch the distractions and look out for each other, as one life lost is one too many.”
Double demerits are now in place until Monday, inclusive.
