RAC is urging Western Australians to give the gift of safety this Christmas, as new data reveals road fatalities have almost doubled in recent months.
According to preliminary data from the Road Safety Commission, 37 people lost their lives on WA roads in October and November, compared to 20 over the same period last year.
RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs Will Golsby said last month also saw the highest number of road fatalities for November since 2012.
“We don’t want to see this trend continue – we’ve already lost far too many people on our roads this year, with 153 people missing from Christmas tables across WA.
“The festive season is a traditionally high-risk time on our roads, and with more people travelling across WA than ever, it’s critical we don’t lose sight of the risks we face behind the wheel.
“Tragically, people continue to lose their lives and suffer life-changing injuries on WA’s roads every single day – these are people with families and friends who are also suffering.
“Please look after yourself and your fellow road users this Christmas by slowing down, ditching the distractions and nominating a skipper to do the driving.
“We also urge those enjoying a trip to our regions to plan ahead, drive to the conditions and take adequate breaks to fight fatigue.
“Safety is the best gift you can give this year, and every year, so please take care and enjoy this valuable time with friends and family.”
Double demerits are now in place until Sunday, January 3.
