RAC’s Risky Roads Survey has received more than 10,000 nominations from West Australians, identifying busy streets, highways and intersections in desperate need of safety upgrades, right across Perth.
The bustling intersection of Marmion Avenue and Seacrest Drive in Sorrento topped the list as the riskiest in the city – with locals reflecting on countless crashes and near misses.
Midvale’s Farrall Road was named Perth’s most dangerous road, with many residents pointing out a lack of infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.
RAC General Manager External Relations Will Golsby said the Risky Roads Survey shines a spotlight on safety issues that can often be overlooked.
“Driving or cycling to work shouldn’t be a stressful or dangerous experience, but unfortunately that’s the reality for many in Perth,” Mr Golsby said.
"This survey result shows there’s an urgent need for safety treatments across metropolitan Perth. There are some great opportunities for low-cost intersection upgrades and better walking and cycling paths.”
Mitchell Freeway southbound in West Perth, where multiple merge lanes cause confusion as the Mitchell becomes the Kwinana, was named our city’s second-riskiest stretch. The journey from Banksia Grove to Bullsbrook on Neaves Road rounded out the top three.
The notoriously complicated rail-and-traffic crossing on Victoria Street, Curtin Avenue and Stirling Highway in Cottesloe claimed second spot on the risky intersections list.
The intersection of Campersic and Haddrill Roads in Baskerville, in the Swan Valley, came in third.
“Someone is killed or seriously injured on our roads every five hours,” Mr Golsby said.
“That’s why the feedback from this campaign is so important – it will continue to amplify our calls for safer roads across Perth.”
Last year, 166 people didn’t return home to their loved ones because of road trauma in WA – with 67 lives lost on Perth roads.
“We will now work with government and road safety agencies to address community concerns, to work towards solutions, and to ultimately reduce the impact of road trauma,” Mr Golsby said.
