Storm FAQs
If you have a current home or contents policy with RAC, or both, your building or contents are covered if they’re damaged or destroyed by a storm (including cyclones) – up to your sums insured.1
1 Please note that you’re not covered for storm damage within the first 48 hours after the initial start of your policy, unless your policy started:
- When you first took possession of your building.
- When your lease for your building first commenced.
- Immediately after another policy covering the same risk expired without a break in cover.
Cover is issued by RAC Insurance Pty Limited. Our products are developed and distributed for appropriate target markets in accordance with our policy. Benefits are subject to policy conditions and PED Guide. Before you make a decision, please check the PDS and TMD to see if the policy is right for you.
When claiming for building damage, we’ll ask you about the level of damage and your safety. Once you submit your claim, we’ll get a repairer to contact you within two business days and assess your damage. If your building is unsafe, they’ll do this within two business hours.
For contents claims, you may need to list all your damaged items or, depending on your circumstances, we may assign a restorer to take care of this. Once you submit your claim, either the restorer will contact you within two hours or, if you’ve claimed online, we’ll contact you within one business day.
When there’s been a serious storm, the timeframes can be a bit longer than indicated. Also, our phone lines may be very busy and claiming online may be quicker.
Please note the process for fence damage is different. Whether you claim online or over the phone, we’ll guide you through the process.
Building insurance from RAC covers loss or damage to your fences and gates caused by storms, as long as they were structurally sound and well maintained prior to the damage or loss occurring.*
You can claim online for your storm damaged fence 24/7. Generally, we offer a cash settlement for fence repairs, once you’ve made a claim and we’ve approved it. If it’s a shared fence, the fence belongs to you and your neighbour so you’ll need to organise repairs with them.
* Please note that you’re not covered for storm damage within the first 48 hours after the initial start of your policy, unless your policy started:
- When you first took possession of your building.
- When your lease for your building first commenced.
- Immediately after another policy covering the same risk expired without a break in cover.
You’ll need an itemised quote that includes labour and material costs for the damaged portion of the fence.
If the cash amount doesn't cover your costs, please send us your quote. We'll review the amount in your quote and discuss your options. Email claims@rac.com.au with your claim number in the subject line.
