At RAC, we're committed to keeping our members updated on important changes that affect them. That's why we want to make you aware of WA Government towing regulations, which commenced on 10 January 2025.

Western Australia’s towing industry reforms, aimed at protecting motorists involved in traffic crashes, commenced in 2025.

The new regulations include maximum charges for towing and storage of light vehicles and motorcycles that are towed from the scene of a crash in the Perth and Peel regions.

The charges are set by the WA Government and apply to all operators.

Maximum towing fees

  • $485 for the first 50km.
  • An additional $4.40 per kilometre applies after 50km.
  • A one-off after-hours surcharge of $138 can also be applied on weekends, public holidays, and between 5pm and 8am on weekdays.
  • If applicable, a reasonable charge for the recovery of a vehicle from a difficult-to-access area (e.g., from a river, culvert, or inside a building).

Maximum storage fees

  • $25 per day for light vehicles.
  • $12.50 per day for motorcycles.
  • A one-off administration fee of $88 can also be applied.

If you’re in an accident

If you're in an accident and need a tow, call RAC on 13 17 03.

  • We'll organise a tow truck for you and ensure everything is managed correctly.

If you organise your own tow:

  • The driver must ask you to sign a completed Department of Transport-approved Authority to Tow form recording the towing and storage charges payable. These cannot exceed the maximum regulated charges.

For information regarding the regulations, please visit the WA Government website.

Please check your RAC insurance policy for your vehicle to understand your level of cover and towing inclusions.
