RAC has been recognised globally for its innovative work on Automated Vehicle (AV) technology, receiving a Special Mention from the International Transport Forum for the trial of the RAC Intellibus.
The RAC Intellibus was one of three projects recognised, commended by the judging panel for having a comprehensive approach to studying and preparing the deployment of automated vehicles as part of collective passenger transport.
RAC General Manager Public Policy Anne Still said RAC was thrilled to be awarded a Special Mention by the International Transport Forum for the 2018 Transport Achievement Award.
“This is an important global acknowledgement of the innovative transport work being done in Western Australia,” Ms Still said.
“We warmly congratulate our counterparts involved in the New York City Vision Zero road safety programme and the Kenyan Cargo Drone project, as the other projects to be recognised worldwide.
“Increasing understanding about the potential impacts and opportunities of automated vehicle technology is an ongoing priority for RAC.
“With support from the State and Federal Governments, the City of South Perth and the vehicle manufacturer Navya, RAC's Automated Vehicle Trial is helping WA prepare a roadmap for the safe transition to this new technology.
“The complexity of the RAC Intellibus trial makes it among the most progressive in the world and continues to put WA on the map as a front-runner in the testing of automated vehicle technology.”
At the time of its launch, the public trial of the RAC Intellibus was the first automated vehicle trial on Australian roads.
Since launching to the public in 2016, the RAC Intellibus has travelled 11,000 driverless kilometres, with 97.8 per cent of participants saying a driverless shuttle like the Intellibus could be used as a service in the future.
The 2018 Transport Achievement Award of the International Transport Forum was presented this week in the presence of transport ministers from around the world at their 2018 summit in Leipzig, Germany.
