RAC is urging Western Australians to be extra vigilant this weekend as new data reveals storm claims have more than doubled over the past four years.
RAC Home Claims Manager Glen Walker said in 2018, RAC received 16,881 storm related claims which had crept up from 8,056 in 2015.
“Storms like the one forecast for this weekend often come quickly and catch homeowners and motorists off guard,” Mr Walker said.
“The most common items damaged in a winter storm include fences and gates, ceilings, rooves and patios, which is why it’s important to prepare your home in advance including securing any loose items around your property.”
RAC’s tips for weathering a storm:
- Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged
- If there’s lightning, unplug electrical appliances and avoid using your landline telephone
- Always stay indoors and keep away from windows
- Make sure your pets have adequate shelter
- In the event of flooding, remember you can make sandbags by filling plastic bags or pillowcases with sand
- If you find yourself outdoors during a storm, take shelter away from trees, power lines, metal objects, stormwater drains, rivers and streams
“During a storm, when roads are extra slippery and visibility is reduced, the risk of being involved in a serious crash is also much higher,” Mr Walker said.
“We’d urge motorists to avoid taking risks by driving to the conditions, slowing down, and if necessary, pulling over until it’s safe to drive again.”
