RAC will next week deliver critical road safety messages to students from regional Western Australia during School Sport WA’s Senior High Schools Country Week.

Forty eight schools are expected to attend this year’s events, with students being able to take part in a number of road safety activities while competing at UWA Sports Park.

RAC General Manager Corporate Affairs, Will Golsby said it was important to educate future drivers to reduce the number of road fatalities and serious injuries in WA.

“Tragically, young drivers are some of the most vulnerable people on our roads, becoming even more high risk as they transition from supervised driving to provisional and full licenses,” Mr Golsby said.

“Last year, road users aged between 20 and 29 made up the highest number of fatalities in WA, reinforcing the importance of road safety education from a young age.

RAC will be providing students with free water bottles, a chill out zone with giant games and a water station to fill up their bottles throughout the day. Students will also be able to compete for prizes in debates covering important road safety topics such as inattention and reckless driving.

RAC will also be sponsoring a leadership forum, where up to 90 student leaders will hear from two inspiring Australians, Belinda Stowell, Sailing Gold Medallist and Symon Still, a partial quadriplegic Injury Prevention Manager from PBF Australia.

School Sport WA Manager, Peter Smith said they were pleased to have RAC as their road safety education partner.

“More than 3,300 students will play sport at Senior High Schools Country Week, we appreciate the support of RAC to deliver the all-important road safety messages to these future road users."

During Country Week, students will have the opportunity to join RAC Road Ready, a free membership which teaches students about road safety, the learning to drive process and buying their first car. Students who join at Country Week will go in the draw to win a $100 Rebel Sports voucher.

RAC also recommends students take advantage of other road safety programs such as keys2drive which gives learner drivers a free lesson with an accredited instructor.
