In the lead up to the Easter break, an RAC survey has revealed that more West Australians are swapping overseas and interstate travel for local getaways, with the South West and Great Southern emerging as the destinations of choice.
Around 50 per cent of survey respondents are travelling interstate and internationally less often than a few years ago, with 51 per cent saying they are more likely to holiday in the South West and 40 per cent within the Great Southern.
RAC Senior Manager Communications, Rhys Heron said road safety needed to remain top of mind as more people trade overseas escapes for getaways in regional WA.
“It is fantastic that more West Australians are choosing to holiday in their own backyard and discover more of what makes our State so unforgettable,” Mr Heron said.
“Easter is always one of the busiest times on our roads, so we’re urging all road users to ensure their cars are road ready before setting off, to slow down on the road, ditch the distractions and take regular breaks.”
The survey also highlighted a rise in camping and caravanning, with 1 in 4 respondents opting for campsite or caravan/camper stays during their holidays.
Safe caravanning remains a focus for travellers, with 75 per cent of respondents agreeing that caravan drivers should be required to undergo some type of training.
Concerningly, 41 per cent of caravanners reported that other motorists display impatience or aggression towards them on the road.
“Vehicles towing a caravan can’t travel as fast as other cars and need to allow extra space for turning and braking, in case they have to stop suddenly,” Mr Heron said.
“It is crucial we all share the road respectfully – there is nothing more important than reaching your destination safely.”
